SPECIAL SESSION ON Applications of Technology for Mental Health

SPECIAL SESSION ON

APPLICATIONS OF TECHNOLOGY FOR MENTAL HEALTH

SESSION ORGANIZERS

EDITORIAL BOARD

SESSION DESCRIPTION

It is perhaps impractical to address the global demand for treatment via in-person care models alone (Torous et al., 2021). There is therefore increasing interest in digital mental health technologies (e.g. smartphone apps, virtual reality, social media and chatbots) to extend mental health support (Torous et al., 2021). Benefits are numerous and include ease of access, reach, increased cost efficiency, and potential to reduce stigma. However, the digital divide should not be overlooked, nor should the prospect that such interventions may be more appealing to certain demographics (e.g. young people), which should be considered in their design and development.

This symposium of two 1.5hr sessions is designed to bring together researchers, scientists, and industry experts in the field of digital healthcare to cover the applications of technology to the field of mental health. Presentations will cover a wide range of topics within this area, including the use of technologies to enhance and expand the delivery of psychological treatments, novel interventions for psychoeducation and training of mental health professionals. The session will also include discussion of the wider implications and ethical considerations associated with technological advances in mental healthcare.
