SESSION DESCRIPTION

Artificial Intelligence (AI) can play a dual role in mitigating climate change.  Firstly, Green AI explores how AI can be developed and deployed in a manner that reduces its carbon footprint. Although sophisticated AI algorithms such as Generative Pre-trained Transformers and Deep Convolutional Neural Networks have yielded groundbreaking results, they are within the  Red AI category, generating enormous amounts of CO2 in our environment during training and applications. For example, researchers have demonstrated that the CO2 emissions from training and applying a transformer are even more substantial than the lifetime emissions of an automobile. Green AI pursues AI development processes that minimise environmental impact. Secondly, AI can be leveraged in optimising our environmental sustainability efforts through environment monitoring, optimisation of the energy mix, impact assessment of decarbonisation policies and development of predictive models for climate change. The special session invites original research or survey papers that investigate the potential of AI to operate sustainably or contribute to solving some of the most pressing environmental challenges.
